Currently, one in eleven Californians ages 65+ (8.6%) live in a rural or frontier area, spanning 57 of California\u2019s 58 counties.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> By 2040, the population ages 85+ in rural California will grow 158%, nearly 50 times faster than the traditional working-age population (ages 18-64).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img class=\" wp-image-4202 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thescanfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Infographic-1-e1762205451812-300x181.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"548\" height=\"331\" \/><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">In our work to support the development of local <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescanfoundation.org\/resource\/a-toolkit-for-developing-local-multisector-plans-for-aging-in-rural-areas\/\">Master Plans for Aging in rural areas<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we heard from stakeholders that programs and policies that the work in urban and suburban areas often doesn't translate to rural communities. Community members elevated challenges in access to long-term services and supports (LTSS), health care, and housing, as well as recommendations to address these challenges. These learnings and recommendations are distilled into three policy briefs to educate and inspire policymakers and advocates to take action.
