Themed RFP
AGEnts for Change
The SCAN Foundation (Foundation) is seeking to provide support to community-based organizations within California as part of its AGEnts for Change. Support will be provided to organizations to support the development or expansion of volunteer programs and engage their volunteers in social action.
Grantees will be required to assess their organization’s interest and capacity for engaging in social action, participate in training, strengthen their existing infrastructure to support advocacy, train volunteers to be a part of advocacy efforts, and develop an action plan. As part of developing the action plan, organizations will conduct a community needs assessment, identify the role their volunteers will fill in this movement and connect with the larger advocacy community. The Foundation envisions that the first 12-months of the project will involve building organizational capacity for social action. This will include, but is not limited to, training of staff, expanding or building a volunteer base, training of volunteers and conducting an assessment of the needs and/or issues in the community. During the second 12-months of the project, grantees will engage in advocacy as part of the social movement they create.
This RFP is part of a larger project by the Foundation to build a social movement in California, with the goal if increasing and improving home- and community-based services for seniors and their caregivers. Through a RFP released in June, the Foundation sought a California-based community partner, to provide advocacy training and technical assistance (TA) to grantees of the AGEnts for Change initiative.

Past Themed RFPs
2009: Investing in California's Direct Care Workforce by Increasing Geriatric Training Opportunities
The direct care workforce includes nursing aides, home health aides among others. This workforce provides the bulk of care for seniors living at home, in the community, and for residents of long-term care facilities. In California, there are more than 150,000 certified nursing assistants (CNA) and home health aides (HHA) providing paid care and support for a growing number of older adults and persons with disabilities.
The SCAN Foundation, through this RFP, awarded five grants in 2009 dedicated to the development of a series of continuing education curricula for the direct care workforce in California, specifically targeted to the care of seniors. Continuing education provides an opportunity to enhance skills and gain insight into specific topics related to patient care. Through developing geriatric focused continuing education curricula, which are based on adult learning principles, this workforce can be better equipped to provide the best care possible to California seniors.
