A November 8, 2009 story from The Tribune, provides anecdotal evidence of the key role played by family members in caregiving. However, it is not easy for the caregivers. “Family care giving comes at a physical, emotional and financial price, so it is imperative that family caregivers are supported with respite and other supports and services,” said John McCalley, Director of the Iowa Department on Aging.” The article tells the story of Sue Elbert, who provides care for her mother, Harriett Bullock, “at home with support provided through the Medicaid Home and Community Based Services-Elderly Waiver Program, which the Iowa Department of Human Services administers to allow clients to receive in home services instead of nursing home care.”
