A Look at Turnaround for Workers in Home Care and Nursing Homes

Those who deliver long-term services and supports are often underpaid and underappreciated by the agencies and nursing homes where they work. There are two mains reasons why they leave, according to a 2007 report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, “Job Perceptions and Intent to Leave Among Direct Care Workers: Evidence From the Better Jobs, Better Care Demonstrations,” published in The Gerontologist.

“Specifically, the perceived lack of opportunity for advancement and the perception of work overload were most significant, particularly among home care agency and skilled nursing facility workers…” How can management keep them satisfied? There “are positive aspects of caregiving work that management may want to build on to increase retention. Altruism (helping others) contributes to a lowering of the intent to quit.”
