About Us

The SCAN Foundation integrates policy and programmatic grantmaking with mission-aligned impact investing to drive near-term solutions and long-term, systems-level changes. Through this approach, we work across sectors to address structural barriers and build more equitable systems for aging.

Who We Are

The SCAN Foundation has long been a catalyst for advancing community-based solutions for older adults. Founded in 2008, we are a national philanthropy with deep roots in California. From championing the state’s first-in-the-nation Master Plan for Aging to driving policy and systems change, California has been our launchpad for demonstrating scalable solutions in aging policy.

Today, in addition to our work in California, we’re bringing those insights and innovations to the national stage—partnering with state and federal leaders to ensure that policies, programs, and systems reflect the needs of older adults to age well at home and in their communities.

  • How We Work

Our grants and impact investments prioritize communities that have been historically marginalized with an emphasis on older adults of color, those with lower- and middle-incomes, and rural and geographically underserved communities. By lifting the lived experiences of these older adults, we ensure their voices shape the policies, programs, and investments that affect their lives.

Grantmaking: We fund research, elevate lived experience, build coalitions, and advance policies rooted in the real needs of older adults.

Impact Investing: We invest catalytic capital to scale innovations that support healthy, independent aging—especially for those overlooked by traditional markets and public systems.
