Advancing Rural Aging Policy in California
The Advancing Rural Aging Policy in California webinar took place on December 11 and delved into the differences in rural definitions and highlighted the unique challenges rural older adults experience related to long-term care, access to health care, and other vital services. Presenters elevated considerations for policymakers as they develop policies to support rural older adults and their families. Moderated by TSF’s Megan Burke, confirmed speakers included:
- Sarita A. Mohanty, President and CEO, The SCAN Foundation
- Pauline DeLange Martinez, Research and Community Engagement Manager, Family Caregiving Institute, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, UC Davis
- Carolyn Nava, Community Relations Director, Disability Action Center
- Susan DeMarois, Director, California Department of Aging
- Hovik Khosrovian, Senior Policy Advisor, Health Care Workforce Development, Department of Health Care Access and Information
Why Now?
Older adults are the fastest-growing demographic in California, especially in rural areas, where one in 11 Californians aged 65 and older reside. By 2040, the population ages 85+ in rural California will grow 158%, nearly 50 times faster than the traditional working-age population (ages 18-64). In addition to population growth, how we define “rural” has implications for program planning and funding. Depending on which classification is used, California can look mostly urban or mostly rural. Rural health and aging policy experts joined together for a discussion on the policy implications of the changing face of rural California and dove into informed, practical strategies that can address those disparities for stronger aging outcomes for all.
